About this course

The life and ministry of Jesus Christ is presented through four distinct yet complementary accounts in the New Testament: the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
Together, these four books provide a rich, multi-dimensional portrait of Jesus' earthly ministry, which spanned roughly from AD 26 to 30, focusing on His revolutionary teachings, miraculous signs, sacrificial death, and bodily resurrection.

The Four Portraits of Jesus

Each Gospel writer approached the story of Jesus with a unique perspective, audience, and theological emphasis:

Matthew: Presents Jesus as the promised Jewish Messiah and King, carefully tracing His genealogy back to King David and Abraham to show how He fulfilled Old Testament prophecies. Matthew is structured around five major teaching blocks.

Mark: Presents Jesus as the energetic, action-oriented Servant and suffering Son of God. As the shortest and likely earliest Gospel, Mark moves rapidly from event to event, emphasizing Jesus' authority in action and His ultimate sacrifice.

Luke: Presents Jesus as the Savior for all people, emphasizing compassion for the marginalized, the role of the Holy Spirit, and prayer. Written by a Gentile physician, Luke highlights the universal scope of Christ's mission.

John: Presents Jesus as the eternal divine Word (Logos) and Son of God. John includes unique discourses and seven defining "I Am" statements, written specifically so that readers would believe in Jesus and find eternal life.

Key Stages of Christ’s Earthly Ministry

While the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) share a common narrative flow, and John provides deep theological reflection, the combined storyline of Christ's life follows a clear progression:

  • The Preparation: The ministry begins with the-announcement of John the Baptist, who prepared the way, followed by Jesus' baptism in the Jordan River and His temptation in the wilderness.
  • The Galilean Ministry: Jesus based His early public work in Galilee, preaching the arrival of the kingdom of God, calling His disciples, performing profound miracles, and delivering foundational teachings like the Sermon on the Mount.
  • The Journey and Final Weeks: Jesus traveled toward Jerusalem, teaching through unforgettable parables and clearly predicting His upcoming suffering and resurrection.
  • The Passion and Resurrection: The climax of all four Gospels focuses heavily on the final week of Jesus' life—His triumphal entry, the Last Supper, His trial, crucifixion as a ransom for many, and His victorious resurrection from the dead, which anchors the Christian faith.
